Dr. B,

I have a friend whose 13 year old daughter has suddenly started having migraines. They were bad enough they kept her in the hospital for a week trying to figure out how to get them under control. They have ran all kinds of tests and nothing shows up. She has missed the past 4 weeks of school due to headaches that she says are a level 8 on a pain scale. They are seeing a neurologist who for the past two weeks just keeps adjusting migraine medication but nothing is working. Would you have any suggestions on other specialists that might be of help? The neuro they are seeing now is not pediatric and I suggested they go to a big hospital and see a team of pediatric neurologist like at UVA. What would your thoughts be?

Hi,

A pediatric neuro or a pain medicine doctor would be best. Have they tried amitriptyline? Or Topomax?

They have tried both. She has missed almost 5 weeks of school now with headaches everyday, worse in the mornings than evenings.

hey, Kristy!!!

My beastly sizes 16 year old lad started with Migraines at 14.

Seeing a Ped neuro was Marvellous for us!

One of our ER visits, my physician colleague tried 2g of Magnesium IV
after the migraine protocol that we use up here (10mg IV metoclopromide
and 30mg IV ketorolac didn't really work much). And it knocked it down significantly.

Ethan's preventer... is 250mg of magnesium twice a day... and he's down to migraines about every 6-8 weeks now). He uses rescue sumitriptan.
HTH!!!
