I realize that it can be very normal for a baby to spit up but what does it mean when they are still spitting up 2-3 hours after eating? It's not projectile but it is quite a bit and we are going through clothes (both me and her!) and blankets like mad! Is it possible that a baby this age can tolerate powder formula better than the concentrate? We were doing Similac Advance Stage 1 with DHA and ARA powder but thought that we would try switching to the concentrate (I never feel like you get the same amount of powder in the bottles). Now, I feel like she is pooping more often (still only every 2-4 days) but the spitting up actually seems worse on the concentrate. It may just seem worse because it smells horrible when it comes back up. We switched to Dr. Brown's bottles and burp her every ounce. She takes 4 ounces every 3-4 hours. What else can we try? We have the crib mattress raised and try to keep her upright for 1/2-1 hour after eating. She is normally quite a happy baby through all of this. Maybe it's just me that it is bothering!!! Would it hurt to switch back to the powder? I have even considered going back to Good Start because I don't remember it smelling so bad with my oldest. Any advice, any one?

Spitting up more may not be related to the change in formula...just a coincidence. Formula babies always stink! LOL! Mind you...breastfed babies can stink, too!

It won't hurt to to switch back to powder (and it is easier on your pocket book). See if the switch makes it better. If it doesn't...then you know that the change in formula had little to do with it.

I, personally, am very anti-good-start, for ethical reasons (and...well...I can't get past feeding a baby formula that's made by a candy company in Canada). I'd move her to Enfalac before goodstart...but again....it's ME...not you. You do whatever you think is best for the baby you have in front of you.

If she's starting with reflux, it might not be bothering her right now...but repeated spitting up over time may indeed start to bother her. Some babies don't have reflux...and they are just spitter-uppers. Ethan spit up GOBS upto about 8 weeks. Bronwyn spit up ONLY three times!

HTH
Nice to see you!

Hi,

This sounds like reflux to me. You may want to try a soy formula or protein hydrosylate formula. If that doesn;t work then I would get reflux medicine.

So what brand of soy formula would you suggest? Keep in mind that we live in Canada. We will also be seeing the pediatrician here today for her 1 month check up. I will see what he has to say too. Thank you so much for responding.

Hey, Tanya. Bronwyn was on soy formula until she was almost 3!

Isomil is the best on the market in Canada. Babies tend to like it better than the alsoy and the prosobe. Isomil is usually readily available at wal-mart, superstore and safeway. In fact, when we had to move the Isomil2 after 1 year of age, I requested it and safeway brought it in for me (it wasn't on the shelves anywere in FSJ at the time). Also, if you need to move to the step 2, the isomil has a better fat and nutrient content (bronwyn was on the skinny side so we needed as much fat as possible, even through age 3 for her).

You can also go to the abbott website, and fill out their little thingie, and say that you want to feed soy...and they'll send you the soy samples, plus the coupons (they've got pretty good coupon rebates, too).

the website is http://www.abbott.ca I have to go write that stats test right away...if you can't find a link, call the ottawa office and ask them if they have any free samples to send...and if that isn't the office you call, then they should be able to direct you. You can e-mail me (or call me) if you need to. See my facebook page for the phone number.

Well, we switched to a Enfamil Lactose Free formula on the advice of the Dr. on Tuesday. What a difference!!! She isn't spitting up any where near as much and is much happier. I hope that this is all we need to do. Thank you so much for the advice!

Okay, as you can see from my earlier post, we switched to Enfamil lactose free formula. The change seems to have helped greatly with the spitting up but now we are dealing with very hard stools. She has been on the new formula for two weeks now. The first bowel movements were okay but as we went on they seemed to get more and more solid/firm. She is pooping every 3-4 days and has had to strain very hard for some of them. Sometimes she isn't able to finally go until after several bottles and lots of straining. There is no mucous or blood but the stools are very hard and dry (about the size of a walnut). Last night she managed to get out a hard lump and then again during the night. After her bottle int he middle of the night she went again and it had softened some. This had happened before a few days ago and it went right back to hard and dry. Is this something that I need to give more time or do we need to look at switching formula again? Today has been very trying as she wasn't her happy self and seemed really uncomfortable most of the day. She was also wanting to eat 5 ozs every 2-3 hrs and then was not really happy after eating. Sometimes, she seemed like she could have eaten more. Could we still possibly be looking at reflux even thought the spitting up isn't as bad? She is 6 weeks now. Maybe it is just a growth spurt? Do they get uncomfortable during one? Does six five ounce bottles in 24 hours sound like a reasonable amount for a 6 week old? Gosh, you'd think she was my first baby!!! Thanks again!
