Hi Dr. B.,

I am in the process of enrolling my little one in school. I was told today that their is a new required immunization. The person from the school was a temp and she really did not have any information regarding this new shot. It is called the Hepatitis A series. The chart says the shot can be given as early as 24 months. Can you provide any infomation regarding this particular vaccine? She also says I can obtain a waiver from your office if I don't want my little one to have the shot.

I am not sure about the answer, but I am positive Hep A is a shot given to people traveling to foreign countries that are 'third world' . I could be wrong, but I would like to know if they are requiring that ...why?

I looked at the chart again and it says that the hepatitis A shot is recommended / required for selected populations.

Hi,

I've been routinely giving that shot for about 2 years now in anticipation of the recommendation. I didn't want to get overwhelmed when the recommendation came out. Pretty much all of my patients have had it unless they have signed a paper saying that they don't want it. I would call the office and see if you got it.

Dr. B,

You are correct. My little one did receive the shot. My husband took her to the 2 year exam and received the first dose. He kept telling me that a second dose was needed. I don't know why I thought this was for Hep B. Tyler had her second dose a few weeks ago. These vaccinations are quite confusing. I am really going to consider not having any additional vaccinations for my little one. I have heard too many bad stories.

Hi,

I wouldn't consider not giving the vaccines. The stories are mostly not true or not due to the shots.

I'm not 100% certain about this, my sil has a 3 yr old son who after recieving his first set of shots became very sick. When he turned 1 he didn't speak when he turned 2 he lost most of his interactions and speech and sits and slaps himself in the head when he feels over whelmed he was just diagnosed with autism 3 months ago. And she has done alot of research and she swears it is from the mercury or something in the vaccines. I don't know I don't want to start a huge controversey, just giving a first hand experience from my sil's point of view on it. I see how my nephew is doing and he's just not a happy child at all. I wish I knew more of his story but I don't. I feel like i'm prying if i ask too many questions. Anyway, good luck in your decision as I know its not an easy one to make. She since has had 2 more children and neither of them have ever received one single vaccine and she plans to keep it that way.

I have heard many bad stories regarding the side effects of vaccines. If I had an autistic child, I would start researching the vaccines as well. As my husband told me a few days ago, I would worry just as much if my little one had not been vaccinated. It is a tough decision.
